↣ Unify the Lists! Get rid of Product Lists...
George Kao
Optimizing the Unsubscribe page for customers...
When someone buys a product, they are put onto 3 potential lists for that product (see attached image) --
Content
Notifications
Marketing
Dang, that's confusing... as an Admin I'm not even sure what "Notifications" and "Marketing" means. I tried searching the Help articles for these 3 words...
Content Notifications Marketing
...and nothing relevant came up at this time. (Let me know if I missed something.)
I wish it was just 1 list per product -- that shows up in the Lists tab just like other email lists.
That way it's clear to both the Customer and Admin which lists the customer is subscribed to.

Here's how it currently works:
- "content" is for Participant
- "notifications" is for "Regular emails" on the Purchase
- "marketing" is for "Marketing emails" on the Purchase
The first is also the "Emails" setting on the Participant.
The latter two are also the "Marketing emails" / "Regular emails" setting on the Purchase screen.
Should we simply drop the ability to choose Purchases as recipients for Broadcasts?
Or still allow you to send to the Purchase (billing contact) but without recipients having any way to opt out other than "do not contact"?
Should we drop them in Segments as well, and just let you go "Contacts" + add condition + "Who purchased ..."?
Or we can keep it the way it is, and improve the design of the subscription management page.
We could, for example, ONLY show that setting when they're clicking from an email sent TO that purchase. That would probably solve everything we need to, no?
George Kao
Calvin Correli: So grateful you're working on this. The simplification will ripple out benefits to many ✨
Here's my take on it, and, I would want to see the opinions of other Simplero super users...
- Purchase / Billing-related emails, since they are rare and important for financial/tax reasons, should be required -- as is true for purchases from many companies, I've noticed -- unless recipient selects "Do Not Contact" ...and it should warn them they'll stop receiving important billing-related emails.
- Marketing Emails should notbe called that... I think nobody, except us marketers, wants to get "Marketing Emails" 😆 and I notice many of my buyers opt OUT of marketing emailseven thoughthey happily opt IN (and stay subscribed) to my "marketing emails"becauseI don't call it that.
So... a couple possible options:
(A) get rid of the end-user's ability to opt into Purchase-related "Marketing Email", and just allow us Admins to automate adding people to our own marketing list(s) as needed. For example, we can easily create a Trigger for each product, to add purchasers to our own marketing list.
(B) Allow us to customize what to
call
it... instead of "Marketing Emails"... for example I call mine "George Kao Announcements -- Courses & Coaching"- Content List for the Participants should also live in the Lists tab, along with all other Lists. I think this has been the biggest pain point for me as an Admin ... feeling like there are hidden Lists that I have to hunt for, that aren't in the Lists tab.
As to whether the Segments should continue displaying Purchases -- Yes I think it's a good idea. Segments is
such
a powerful tool (I hope Simplero admins are using it!) and should be kept as flexible as possible...Thank you again for your dedication and service to all of us 🙇🏻♂️🙏🏼

I'm starting to see why some Admins want Purchases as separate lists... See the comment thread below with Merete Nielsen 🙏🏽

Interesting. I didn't even realize we had a notifications one there, lol.
The other two are because of the checkbox when you purchase. If you allow marketing, we note that, and when you email the product, you can say whether it's a marketing or not (well, not exactly, since that got changed, but in a way ... that's the idea, anyway). The idea being you can choose.
But I can totally see it's confusing.
George Kao
Calvin Correli: I believe if you poll the users, most of us would say that we only want
ONE
marketing list, and multiple product lists. If someone is a fan and wants our marketing, they're not going to nitpick and choose marketing for specific
products, but rather, to hear about all our upcoming products or not
. For product lists, we understand that it should be kept sacred, even though once in a long while we might include an important marketing message in there, knowing that there's the risk of them unsub'ing from product access emails. I think most admins understand this...
Calvin Correli
George Kao: Yeah, this was the overly clever Calvin that concocted this ten years ago, lol.
Nobody else in the industry does it this way.
A good thing to get cleaned up.
Merete Stenner
Calvin Correli: I think Georges take on this might be a bit simplified, so don't clean up too fast.
I myself and many of my customers have a ton of lists already, not having all the products show as lists as well is a huge benefit. And I see most variation of participants and purchasers in various stages used as recipients on broadcasts, so please don't start simplifying that! What would be nice to have changed is the labeling "participants wanting marketing" because that is falsely named and has nothing to do with opting in or out of marketing, but is the difference between opting out of participant emails on that product or not. I have pointed this out to support a long time ago, and it was presumably put on some todolist at a very low priority, but it does cause a lot of confusion when choosing participants.
But I do agree that the opt in/out of emails from products could be presented in a better way to the customer.
George Kao
Merete Stenner: I agree that we should definitely be able to send broadcasts to product participants... but wouldn't it be beneficial to have that product/participant list also listed in the Lists tab? 😊 I'd be curious to know why that wouldn't be a good thing...
Merete Stenner
George Kao: I don't want to mix lists and products, it's two different things even though a product also can be used as a list. If you already have 20+ lists, you don't want your 50+ products to clutter that view up even more. And yes I know you can unstar them as they become less relevant, but that's an unnecessary hassle if you don't mix them up to start with.
And I definitely don't want to confuse users by mixing those two up, because if they show in the same tables, how do you then remember where to go when you need to create a new product and not a list.
For me one of Simpleros super powers is, that a product also works like a list, so you don't need to create a list for each product, and you can even use tags to separate participants on different levels or classes of the same product, when sending broadcasts or segmenting automation emails.
I can't see any benefits in having products show under lists, since they can be chosen separately in broadcast or newsletter recipients, and it will just become harder to find the right list or product to send to if they're mixed.
George Kao
Merete Stenner: thank you for explaining this. Perhaps I need to get accustomed to Simplero's way of having Product lists vs other Lists, and maybe Simplero just needs to make it more obvious to new admins like me that this is how it works, e.g. a pop-up message the first (few) times visiting the Lists tab with link to article explaining the difference.
However, it still seems unintuitive to have "Lists" not include or mention Product (Email) Lists.
Might this be a good solution:
Have a toggle button in Lists to show (or hide) the Product Lists too?
Merete Stenner
George Kao: Where are you looking when you want "Lists" to include products, is it in the Lists table under Contacts - Lists or in broadcast recipients or somewhere else?
George Kao
Merete Stenner: Yes-- the Contacts: Lists table. Would love to see Product Lists shown there too. Perhaps a toggle for hide/show Product Lists would make everyone happy 😊
Merete Stenner
George Kao: to me that wouldn't make sense at all, and I'm afraid it would be very confusing if products showed there as well, it would also make it harder for new users to differentiate between products and lists. If you want to find a product, go to sales -> products instead, I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve by having a combined view of lists and products? (not trying to be grumpy old git here, but I simply don't see what the benefit would be)
